If you would’ve told me I would be living in Monterey, California a year ago I would have gave you the side eye. What you talking about crazy?! I didn’t even know Monterey, California existed until I was told I was moving here. Now I nearly have to pinch myself every morning because I still can’t believe I live in one of the most gorgeous cities in the U.S. It’s truly mind blowing to me.
Monterey is on the central coast of California and is a waterfront community. The ocean is basically my freaking backyard. Who would’ve thought this Indiana girl would get the spectacular view of the mountains on her way to the local grocery? Seriously getting lost here is a privilege, because the scenery will totally distract you. Oh where was I supposed to be? Work? Oh well!
I thought it was only fair that I write a post of why I love Monterey. You know to celebrate the one-year anniversary thing going on here. Because that’s what bloggers do. Right?
Well… ahem let’s get started.
Part A: It was truly love at first sight. I can’t tell you enough how breathtaking Monterey is. You have to experience it yourself. The scenery brings about a sense of tranquility. I can’t help but unravel the cares of this world when I glance at the sea, mountains, trees, sky, etc. It’s like looking at the most captivating piece of art.
Part B: I have a weird obsession with the trees here. They are so unique. They are not your standard trees. Seriously I take pictures of them. They are just peculiar and I love it. The homes here are special too. They include Victorian and Greek styles and even Cottages. They range in colors from bright pink to sky blue. Not one house looks the same.
Part C: (There is so much to Number 1, I need a Part C! My goodness, I promise this is the last “part.”) I have four different lovely beaches at my disposal at all times. The only beach I’ve been familiar with prior is at The Indiana Dunes back home. Let me tell you Monterey beaches are a whole new ball game. It’s even better when a sea otter or whale decides to swim close to shore. The hiking trails here are also incredible. Big Sur is one of the most gorgeous places I’ve been here. Check out more about my hike at Big Sur here.
I can’t tell you how many times I’m stopped during the week to engage in a conversation with a total stranger. Everyone is so nice and genuine. Today I spoke to the sweetest lady about birds. That may be odd, but it was absolutely wonderful.
It seems like every race is represented here. I’ve met Russians, Egyptians, Chinese, Koreans, Greeks, and more. That’s the coolest thing ever! Monterey is truly a melting pot.
I am located pretty much smack dab in the middle of the major spots in California. Los Angeles is five hours away. Santa Cruz is 45 minutes away. San Francisco is two hours away. You get the picture right? I am trying to hit all the hot spots while I am here. Next up is a four-hour drive to the Yosemite Mountains. Yay!
The weather is pretty fall-like to me all the time. They like to call it temperate weather, which means pleasant. You can pretty much wear anything you like just bring a light jacket with you. It’s sunny, but that doesn’t mean it’s hot. I hope that makes sense. I thought it would be extra hot when I first moved here. Boy was I wrong! It stays around mid to low 70’s which I think is perfect.
6. Festivals and Music
There is always a festival to go to here and the best part is they are FREE. These festivals usually allow you to engage in a new culture and chow down on some yummy food. Pacific Grove, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Downtown Monterey usually host these festivities. I also love the local bands and random street musicians that play all over town. Oh, and of course all the hilarious dancers I get to groove with.
Okay friends I think that is all I can dish out for right now. I may update this list later. I will also be doing some more Monterey related posts since I will be leaving in four months. Insane right? Well, until next time my darlings.
Thanks for stopping by. See more gorgeous photos I took of Monterey here.
